I have spent time volunteering on Project Island Song with The Guardians of the Bay of Islands community group over the last few weeks.
Now the Eastern Bay of Islands, including Urapukapuka are pest free the real work has started to restore the islands and bring back the native flora and fauna. So far volunteer activities have included tree planting and weed removal. A building at Otehei Bay on Urapukapuka is being converted into a visitor information centre that will be open by October. The community group are running regular volunteer activities if you want to get involved contact Paul.Padfield@yahoo.co.nz

Wish I could, mate. But my body won't let me. Which is why I can relate illness and damage to making a choice about using drugs which are chemicals and so poisonous in different concentrations to help alleviate health problems. Unless you've been there and had to make the decision you don't really know what the situation is like I guess.
Anyway, even hands-on trapping involves poisons.
And conversely, distributing poisons is hands-on.

If you had a family member who was very sick, and you chose to administer drugs, even though they were known to have questionable side-effects, and you saw the person get better and back to how they were, I think your celebration of the positive would outweigh any contrition about the side-effects. It's nigh impossible to stand there and watch someone you love (in this case Papatuanuku herself) being damaged, and not try to alleviate the burden. And when their life returns more to how it was when they were healthy, you celebrate.

Kim, you seem to be a reliable Herald-reader, and probably read a lot of other publications too, so if anything comes up about the results out at Rangitoto/Motutapu, could you let us know please? That'd be really appreciated.

Hi kukupa. Is the BoI programme still going ahead? Last time I heard was on the news not too long ago, where one of the residents who had previously agreed to the operation, changed his her or their mind at the last minute. Was that situation sorted out for everyone?

They are also doing the islands in the Bay of Islands at the same time!! YEAH!!
I have rung doc and offered my time to help them. I stayed on the island Urupukapuka last year and it was absolutley riddled with big rats, they got into our fish bait, food. How any birds managed to keep their eggs safe I dont know!

Indeed. Very exciting what's going on out in the Gulf so near a big city.
Be interesting to see how maintenance goes in the future. Such a big island - difficult to monitor private boats landing and bringing stow-away rodents with them I imagine...
