As many of you know very well by now, the government is proposing to allow mining in our core conservation areas. This includes our national parks, nature reserves, scenic reserves and marine reserves.

F&B has teamed up with other national ENGOs and community groups to coordinate action on this important issue.

Prior to Christmas Helen completed a great Q&A for our website:

The February F&B magazine will also contain information on this topic.

In addition, we now have a small brochure, summarising the Q&A information (front cover shown below). We are printing the brochure in house at the moment on a demand basis. We'll include a sample in the next branch mailout, but in the interim, if you like copies for a particular event, please yell out by contacting your local conservation field officer or the Wellington national office.

A REALLY good opportunity to get the mining message out there is to attend your local screenings of AVATAR. No really - I mean it!

Some very important conservation messages in this fab new film and very timely for us here in NZ given the government's attack on our key conservation areas. Simply ask us for some brochures, find out when Avatar is screening in your area and turn up at the end to hand the brochures out.

You don't need to say much - you can simply hand them out or say "you might like to know about mining threats in New Zealand".

Good luck and look forward to hearing from you.

  2. Gold prospectors are looking at sifting through the mudflats at Thames. They've got some new fandangled machinery that will let them suck the sand up, sort out the gold and then spit it back onto the mudflats. Wonder how the crabs, worms and shellfish feel about all this?
