I can understand a government wanting to bring us out of recession, I can even understand a government that wants to see its people better off. What I can't understand is why the nz government things that money is the way we are better off.
new zealand (we don't deserve capital letters) has quite good earnings from shark fins. Mfish will tell you they don't target sharks for fins, but they will also admit, its not worth taking the sharks unless target the fins - the carcass is worth very little. Add to that the tuna longline fishery... tuna? 13% tuna and 37% shark - this is a shark longline fishery.
With all the smoke and mirrors going on at home and the obvious money being made from shark fins - there is little wonder that there is no support for sharks.
It is a very sad day indeed when I realise I'm totally ashamed to be a new zealander - a citizen of a country that supports the extinction of so many beautiful species.
