  1. Misinformation about 1080 use in New Zealand is fuelled by distortion, whispers and confabulation. Here are a few examples: http://www.youtube.com/user/TrakaBat#grid/user/28E6A0E4B2725196

When you get cancer , you don't want to add any more poisons to your body , do you ? The forest is like a skin to the planet.
When you see the weka gone , because they say they got a disease , but they eat any ground based poison they can ? You are saving the forest aren't you.

There are more lies on the side of the 1080 proponents. Its lunacy.

The answer to Chris max is that the reality is probably the complete opposite from what he states above.

The Northern West Coast-Buller is the place in New Zealand where the largest and healthiest population of weka (western weka) still remain. Lareg numbers of weka are found from the Heaphy Track right down to Hokitika/Hari Hari and inland to the Main Divide.

It is interesting that it is this exact same part of the country that has received perhaps the most concentrated and sustained Animal Health Board 1080 operations anywhere in the country because it contains a very large number of TB infected cattle and Tb infected possums that are the vectors of the bovine TB.

It certainly isn't clear why weka have died out so completely and rapidly in many parts of the country. Disease is suggested as one mechanism. Another is the impact of stoats (eg see Gerard Hinmarshes book "Swamp Fever" tracing the loss of weka in Golden Bay in the 1980s.)

The Forest and Bird members involved in efforts to re-establish weka in the north Island will have some good ideas on this.

  4. In response to Chris Max, monitoring shows that 1080 isn't the menace to weka that you may have been led to believe. Vehicles on the other hand smack over heaps of weka: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZNBzx3iSIM

    1080: Good News for Conservation

The Department of Conservation has rolled out a series of videos that highlight the importance of 1080 to resurrect our forests. The DVD – 1080: Good News for Conservation – contains interviews with scientists and DOC rangers working on the front line to protect native species, such as blue ducks (whio) and yellowheads (mohua). It also shows shocking scenes of possums, rats and stoats attacking the nests of native birds, eating eggs and killing chicks.

ECO- ACTION: Forest & Bird has ten copies of this DVD to give away to F&B members. If you would like a copy contact Nicole on n.seminiuk@forestandbird.org.nz
