On 10am - midnight Saturday 17th April and 5am - 3pm Sunday 18th April, at the Auckland Domain (base camp is the atrium in the museum) there's a Bio Blitz - a scientific race to count as many species as we can in 24 hours of active hunting. Visitors are welcome (it's free) to a rare opportunity to meet scientists and experience the astonishing array of nature living in the heart of the city.
Previous Bio Blitzes here have come up with hundreds of specimens.
There's field trips with scientists throughout the day and after dark too.

Awesome!
The Bioblitz's here in Wellington have been SO much fun. You learn heaps and get to take part.
We were even lucky enough to find several new species!!
Here's the link to the Auckland Blitz:

Thanks for that link Kirstie - it has great pics from previous Bio Blitzes to give an idea about what goes on including the number of species that've been found. Just awesome, the numbers of different plants and animals in such a limited inner-city area. Makes you realise what must be out there in an unmodified environment!!

And here's one from 2008 (they began in 2004 up here - kudos to Landcare!!) - you can see the gradual increase in F&B promotional material.
We're trying to arrange a F&B stand there again this year and are looking for anyone who could help run the stand. Please feel free to contact forestandbird@gmail.com - all help is much appreciated - we're all volunteers doing it, and any help is great!!Posted 1 year ago # -
Have just been told about a blog set up specifically for this year's Bio Blitz http://nzbioblitz.wordpress.com/

F&B is having a stand at Bio Blitz in Auckland Domain next weekend (17th-18th April) so come along and visit us there. We'll be handing out anti-mining literature along with other F&B productions. If anyone feels like helping distribute this literature to the public, please call on us or contact the F&B Auck office.
The last BioBlitz found 1775 species in 24 hours - the final countdown for this weekend will be at the museum at 3.00pm Sunday 18th.Posted 1 year ago # -
