It's shocking to hear that eggs have been stolen from the nests of endangered fairy terns on the sand at Waipu and Mangawhai. It's another blow to a species that is down to fewer than 40 birds.
DOC suspects that the eggs were stolen, possibly to order by international collectors, because human footprints were seen around the nests. The nests are protected from animal predators by traps.
It's especially sad for the Forest & Bird members who put in many hours working to protect the fairy terns at their four breeding sites north of Auckland.
