  1. Nearly half of our monitored rivers are unsafe for swimming and two-thirds of our native freshwater fish are threatened or at risk.

We've needed a National Policy Statement to address national water quality, and yesterday it was released. However it fell short of the mark, specifically by failing to set a national standard for water quality.

In this interview on Radio New Zealand National our Advocacy Manager, Kevin Hackwell explains its shortcomings

And here's the press release -

Be interesting to see where their $246(?)million clean-up funding goes to.

  3. Ah yes.

Just saw this BBC interview with John Key which questions NZ's Clean Green image given Dr Joy's comments last week. It's bloody brilliant.

  5. And if you missed it - here's an op-ed in the Herald by our own Kevin Hackwell reflecting on both the water policy statement and this new 35 million dollar irrigation plan.

Do we know how where and how this money is going to be used to facilitate more irrigation? I'd have thought it would just require changes to legislation, and not funds. Unless it's for greasing the palms of would-be objectors??...8-)
