The article below, by Forest and Bird General Manager MIke Britton, was published this morning in the Dominion, 9 October. It highlights the complete contrast between what Opposition Leader John Key promised a National led Government would do to protect the environment before the elction versus what they have actually done since taking office led by Prime Minister John Key.

    Utter hypocrisy.

It should be essential reading for everyone, particularly National voters who care about protecting nature and the environment.

I voiced my horror on this issue to Tim Groser, Gerry Brownlee and John Key. I got a response from Kate Wilkinson saying that the intention was to raise the standard of living for all New Zealanders. It's a bogus argument, because relatively few New Zealanders would get much. A few corporate honchos and a few employees....

What I asked and did not get a reply to was if the government was prepared to clean up the hundreds of abandoned and orphaned mine sites already on conservation land. There are hundreds of these and there has never been enough money to repair the ongoing damage they cause. The miners got in, made what they could and left a liability that destroys habitat, poisons water and lasts centuries. Some plan to make wealth.

News recently indicated the absolutely vast areas off the west coast of the North Island where there are plans to explore for minerals.

Also, news that there are schemes to start mining at Mt Aspiring has led to a site on Facebook in opposition to it, and already signed by about 3000 people (Hands Off Mt Aspiring page)
