Nuclear physicist Professor Sir Paul Callaghan has suggested that the Government think smarter and NOT mine national parks.
At a Massey University graduation ceremony in Wellington on Friday, he said the Government's mining idea was “a failure of leadership".
This is what Infonews says:
The former Massey physics professor, now at Victoria University, called it “stupid economics”. He said any economic benefit would be outweighed by the damage to New Zealand’s international reputation. “It represents an affront to our future, indeed, an assault on the heart and soul of our nation. It is a failure in leadership of the meanest kind," he said to loud applause.

Gerry Brownlee blames the "anti-mining community" for derailing the discussion by using scaremongering tactics from early on. http://www.3news.co.nz/Mining-debate-derailed-by-scaremongering---Brownlee/tabid/419/articleID/159430/Default.aspx

The concern is the comment at the end about Paparoa. i.e. it's likely (as we always thought) that Great Barrier and Coromandel are off the table, and they will still go for Paparoa - let's not lose the momentum here.

Can anyone tell me, has there been the same degree of frustration from Ngai Tahu to Brownlee as from Hauraki Maori about mining in Coromandel and iwi on GBI?

Ah, I understand now your concern about the last comment in the news item I've just watched http://www.3news.co.nz/Government-eyes-mining-back-down/tabid/370/articleID/159414/Default.aspx
Sorry, I hadn't even seen that when I posted about the "scaremongering" earlier. That was simply a news item about Brownlee saing the debate had been captured by scaremongerers.
Yes, probably GBI and Coromandel will be off the hook, but focus will go onto Paparoa. And what about the other areas which were identified as potential, like on Stewart Island?
The whole thing from day one has had an air of 'creating a smokescreen' about it - "look at this everyone, while we do something else you're not looking at...."Posted 1 year ago # -
There's a piece from Te Karere here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mox4mIjgZpc&feature=player_embedded regarding Gerry's discussions with Ngai Tahu on Paparoa. I can't understand why he keeps talking about 'putting our case' forward, when he's supposed to be neutral - isn't he?
for someone who is determined not to prejudge the outcome, it seems the government has put quite a lot of effort into arguing the case for mining (and failed to take into consideration economic impacts on tourism for example). Doesn't seem like a neutral position to me...
