Great Post by Greens Co Leader Russell Norman outlining all the long term problems with river blocking high dams. Some bizarre comments by new Zealanders who think that most of our freshwater fish species don't need access to the sea/estuaries for breeding.

  2. Good news that Hydro Developments Ltd's hydro scheme on Stockton Plateau on the West Coast will go ahead. HDL and Solid Energy last week put behind them their differences about whose hydro scheme is best.
With power from this scheme, there's obviously no need to dam the gorgeous Mokihinui River.

Does this hydro scheme uses the water-runoff from the mine to turn turbines? So no river will need to be dammed? Or does it need to have some river as a 'backup', does anyone know?

  4. Just discovered this little gem on Chris Laidlaw's programme - check out the piece on community-owned electricity generation schemes -

These community schemes will be a good way to get people to re-connect to the socket!
