Similar size to a sparrow, very similar looking but very ground friendly, I thought it may have been malformed but it appears to have been collecting seeds that I feed my pigeons and had a throat full of seeds. I have not seen this before, the amount was about an inch round. when disturbed it only flew to the nearest ground cover. Mainly brown with darker stripes running lengthwise along the body, hopped on both feet at the same time. I could not see any other easily distinguishing marks although its throat area could have been dark red

It is a juvenile Banded Rail I think. Possibly a Weka but I think more the former. Hope your cat has a collar and bell on it :(

Ok thanks for that! If it was my cat it would have a bullet. Not a spotless crake?

Send the photo to DoC perhaps. I was handed a juv. Banded Rail the other day that had been hit by a car and it was similar to your bird but I could be wrong. It isn't a weka for sure.
