Ooh, a nice piece in the NZ Herald about Rotoroa island (in the Hauraki gulf) being reforested, and turned a conservation park. I assume it's already pest free?

Yes, it sounds really good news indeed, but I'm a little confused about ongoing ownership. It sounds sort of like it's remaining in private ownership (with the Salvation Army??) so how exactly is it a gift to Auckland? It sounds too like the Salvation Army want to use it as a bit of a money-earner (via their Endowment Fund), and so I guess there might be costs associated with access at some stage?? Never-the-less, the idea of yet another island in the gulf being restored to bush is a great thing, and provides another 'stepping stone' for those birds (that hopefully might spread to the mainland too). I saw that one of the wild kakariki recently seen on Motutapu soon after DoC's pest-control operation was one banded on nearby Motuihe Island for example, and Rotoroa isn't too far away from either island (as the kakariki flies).
