I read an article about kahu (Harrier Hawk) in the issue of NZ Gardener which arrived today. A viticulturalist in Hawkes Bay (Maimai Creek) has devised a way of using this bird's presence to scare animal pest, particularly small birds from his vineyard. He builds bird tables at the height of the vines, baiting them with dead rabbits. The kahu swoop, but because the rabbits are wired down, they must hang around and slowly eat their prey piecemeal. So blackbirds, song thrushes, starlings and silvereyes don't stay around long, and grape damage falls markedly.
