Our branch had Mick Clout one of the head honcho scientists from Kakapo Recovery come and give us a talk about the programme the other week.
He was talking about how the correlation between the supplementary feeding of the pregnant females and the resulting sex ratios of the population. Basically what he was saying was that well-fed females are more likely to have male offspring, whereas for a more effective population growth you're better off with more females (because of this species not being "monogamous").
All really interesting stuff, showing that it's not at all easy to try to 'replicate' populations by restoring them away from their naturalo environments.
