  1. Kokako Release

The scheduled release of kokako on Tuesday 8 September is confirmed.

    Location: Cascades Kauri Park, Auckland
    Time: 6.30 am

Parking limitations mean you might have to walk for 10-15mins, so come early enough to allow time to do this.

All are welcome at the opening ceremony, but the release will be within the bush, and there will be space for only a limited number to directly observe the birds. A video link is planned, and it is hoped this will allow a wider group to participate in the experience of seeing these beautiful birds returned to the Waitakere forest.

  2. I was there this morning - it was a very special experience to see those kokako bound up into the forest canopy, but it was even more special to see so many people there (at such an early hour!) to welcome them to Ark in the Park.

It was notable to learn that kokako were still present in the park until the 1950s, when the predators took their toll.

I think it is amazing opportunities like seeing such a taonga of our native heritage being put back in the ancient bush where it belongs - that helps give us perspective as to why we must never stop hammering away at those pests in order to give our natural heritage, our legacy, a chance to survive and thrive.

Kudos to all involved with Ark in the Park (especially those volunteers who do all the much-needed pest control) for giving those birds a place to live - and giving me the chance to share in their first moments in their new (old!?) home!

I was really really pleased to hear that at least a couple of people answered Mandy's call from this Green Room to offer to help monitor these birds in Ark in the Park. I assume that offer is still going, if anyone else is interested?
If so, look at www.arkinthepark.co.nz or contact F&B office and ask to speak with Maj Porter (the F&B staff person who manages the project).

    Lovely photo, BTW Nic.
