Marlborough Sounds Marine Reserves

  1. Hi,
Is anyone out there working on creating some of these, or interested in such a thing? Over my lifetime I've seen the fishing, and especially the blue cod, really decline in the area.

A network of marine reserves, supported by the local community, seems to me to be the only answer. It would also be of great value to the marlborough tourist industry, and further cement Marlborough's position as one of the countr's best holiday destinations.

The work of the local community in Fiordland in setting up a network of marine reserves is a real inspiration.

Would the newly established blue cod management group have anything to do with reserves?

And is anyone in F & B working on such a thing?

    Kia ora jh,

Yes Forest & Bird is doing lots in this area - in fact it is one of our key campaigns at the moment - see:

    http://www.forestandbird.org.nz/what-we-do/campaigns/we-love-marine-reserves

Forest & Bird's vision is to see use and management of our coastal and offshore waters for the benefit of everyone. We want to see a network of no take marine reserves, supported by a network of partial take areas for customary, recreational and commercial use. We would like to see all users and non-users of the marine environment benefit from its management. Most importantly, we want to ensure our marine biodiversity is adequately protected, see more fish in the sea and ensure our seas are healthy for all to enjoy.

There is obvisouly already one marine reserve in the Sounds - Long Island or Kokomohua marine reserve established in 1993.

Can I perhaps suggest you contact the local Forest & Bird branch in Marlborough or our 'Top if the South' conservation officer based in Nelson for more info and support. Please contact me direct at k.knowles@forestandbird.org.nz and I will pass on details.

    Cheers

    Kirstie
