We have been watching the extended "Meet the Locals" series on TV6 all week. It is extraordinarily good. My wife and I have both spent much of our lives in nature /environmental education.

Never before have we seen someone as skilled and down to earth as Nic Vallance at sharing the conservation stories from around NZ. She has an enthusiatic and welcoming style that captivates the viewers as well as the DOC staff and local communities being interviewed. Conservation concepts are explained in simple and easily understood ways.

Behind the frontperson is a team of sound and camera people as well as those doing the programme planning and editing. Overall it is first class and a credit to everyone involved.

Above all it is fantastic to see what a rich conservation heritage there is throughout New Zealand and the determination of so many good people to look after these special places and species.

    Congratulations

Was no one else out there as inspired by these conservation programmes as we were?

They weren't just about DOC's work but about all the community groups, scientists and individuals involved in practical conservation.

    Inspiring!

  5. Yep, great stuff and kudos to the crew and Nic.
I caught one of the shows and was very impressed , pity it's not on the free to air channels or even a regular half hour as I've always found the 5 min stories too short and wanting more!

and scroll down to the relevant category and vote for us! Let's show the tele people that we actually quite enjoy having our native wildlife on TV!

oh and in other news, i just finished filming a half-hour special for Seaweek (will play on TVNZ 6 or channel 16 on Sky in second week of March). We took kids snorkeling in the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve, found NZ sea lions on the Otago Coast (including a one-week old pup), and in a first-time for me, encountered the critically endangered Maui dolphins near Manukau Heads (yes, i cried).

please vote for Meet the Locals if you enjoy the show and you've got a spare minute.

    Cheers!
    Nic
