  1. Hi all,
I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that the second series of Meet the Locals (www.tvnz.co.nz/meet-the-locals) is now playing on TVNZ 6 (daily from four pm) and as of today - you can watch it on Channel 16 on Sky TV!

This time around, we travelled all over the country and filmed stories on Hauturu (Little Barrier Island), Great Barrier Island, Cuvier Island, the Chathams, Fiordland, Cape Kidnappers, gannets, fairy terns, kiwi, tuatara, kokako, whio, enviroschools, bowhunting for koi carp, improving access for tahr hunters, deer-recovery, marine mammal rescue, kids who are into bugs, wilding pine retrieval (sling work from a helicopter!), pateke, takahe, you name it...

Highlights included getting to see black robins in the wild on SE Island (Rangatira Island) as well as a Nga Whenua Rahui project to protect kokako on Maori Land east of Opotiki.

Once again, the crew and I were warmly welcomed wherever we went by communities, kids, farmers, hunters, scientists and rangers - all people dedicated to doing their bit to look after our native wildlife and wild places.

You can see the new episodes (and the old ones) here

    Enjoy!!!

Awesome, can i still see it on tvnzondemand?

  3. Yep - although the TVNZ Ondemand site as it was no longer exists - so eventually you'll end up back at www.tvnz.co.nz/meet-the-locals anyway - and if you look under "Watch episodes" in the green menu there, you'll be able to pick and choose from any of the new or old episodes.

Enjoy - and i'd love to hear your feedback!

PS. stay tuned for a half hour special of Meet the Locals for Conservation Week! - I may or may not be able to tell you that the crew and I just spent a few days on Codfish Island/Whenua Hou with some very special young green feathered friends! shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Ahem those are very short shorts you are wearing in that picture Ms Vallance! Are they DOC standard issue or your special TV celebrity shorts? We wouldn't want viewers to be distracted from key conservation messages now would we? And you could catch a chill going out like that, as my mother always said.

  5. Ha ha!!! Helen! you know that the DOC fashion dictates the 'green stubbies' be worn at all times!

It's always important that DOC shows financial efficiencies, and in this case my contribution was a restraint on the amount of material required for shorts... a good gesture in these current times of financial hardship, I thought. : )

Seriously though, that wasn't quite the feedback i was looking for!

It is just that as I get older, I increasingly find myself saying things like "There isn't a lot of material in it, is there dear?" and "You'll get a chill in your kidneys if you go out dressed like that." APART from the regulation Stubbies, I have often envied the work gear that DOC staff get - all that outdoor stuff woudl be v handy. The drab khaki is a bit unfortunate though, makes people look a bit too Steve Irwin/prison guard. But I know you can make even drab khaki look fab Nic! But perhaps Trinny and Susanna or that Gok fella could give DOC a fashion-forward makeover?

Isn't that one of the current Minister's or his associate's jobs? I mean, we want to be proud of showing off our Department of Conservation to the world... and if we can't do it by purely ecological achievements, we'll damn well make their uniforms to die for!! (PS Trinny and Susanna's consultancy fee is probably way beyond anything like getting value for money; we could try for a judge from "NZ's Next Top Model" instead).

  8. Hi all,

Ah yes, speaking of those shorts - i dragged them out of the drawer yesterday as we're heading off filming again next week (started yesterday with a very cool spruce up of the campervan - which a friend told me 'looks like you crashed into a bird sanctuary') - on a marine-focused special of Meet the Locals in time for Seaweek in March. Really looking forward to getting my feet wet this time (think dolphins, sharks, sea lions, marine reserves...).

Before I head off - i noticed that TVNZ have put up a message board for Meet the Locals on their website - asking for feedback on the show. If you've got some time and you've seen the show, it would be really great if you could post up your thoughts here http://tvnz.co.nz/tvnz-6/meet-locals-message-board-3095714?count=5

    Cheers!
    Nic
