The pro-mining on conservation estate in areas of high ecological value keep talking about 'surgical' mining, but even if this fantasy can be realised, it's the tailings and the necessary infrastructure that comes with the mining that can't be ignored so easily. Here's a Google photo (from an anti-mining the Coromandel website)(thanks to Coromandel Watchdog and kukupa for pointing this out) that gives some idea about the area the tailings from a well-known mine in the Coromandel

That's the mine up top left, and the tailings (on the right) are about 4x the area

Good blog about the 'unseen' (for proponents of 'surgical mining' at least) danger from tailings... http://blog.forestandbird.org.nz/an-acid-trip-for-nz-rivers/

  4. Here's some pics from the rally in Wellington yesterday. Over 500 people turned up to voice their concerns about mining in conservation land. As you can see people really let their creative juices flow when they were designing their placards/costumes.

It is a wonderful inspiration to see that 500-1,000 people were prepared to not only voice their concern about proposed mining of National Parks, but actually protest to Parliament about it.

Congratulations to everyone that was involved in the protest. It won't be the last protest and it is incredible important that the Government understands that we are no going to sit idle while they rip up the NZ committment of generations to the permanent protection given to National Parks.

Thank you especially to all the young people that got down to Parliament to protest. PM John Key needs to understand just how angry young people and people of all generations are about the Government's cavalier attitude to our conservation treasures.

It was also wonderful to see the Forest and Bird "bird suits" doing another march to Parliament. Our very active members who have sadly passed on, Kevin Smith and Helen Bain, would both be very proud of you!

The government's discussion document on mining the conservation estate is called: "Maximising our Mineral Potential: Stocktake of Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act and beyond; Discussion Paper". The paper (and appendices) can be downloaded quickly & easily from http://www.med.govt.nz/templates/MultipageDocumentTOC____42792.aspx
Why could I not find this information on Forest & Bird's website?
