The effects of climate change on our oceans and its inhabitatnts has been of deep concern to Forest & Bird for some time. Recently we posted a blog on Ocean Acidficiation:

The Royal Society of New Zealand is adressing this global threat in a New Zealand context and have today released an advice piece to inform policy makers and the public about ocean acidification:

    http://www.royalsociety.org.nz/Site/About/Governance/Policy.aspx

They are also hosting a workshop for policy makers in September.

One of the key conclusions made by the advice paper is: "The only plausible way to slow the rate of ocean acidification is to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide". Well,... let's get on with it then.

New research, reported by World BBC, suggests that another threat of ocean acidification is the alteration of fish behaviour.

Check it out - fish may become 'attracted' to their predators!!

Come on Copenhagen - where's Ocean Acidification on the Agenda?!?

on the other hand, it looks like the ocean might not be the infinite sponge for carbon that we all might assume it would be

so maybe the fish are safer than we thought. of course that means more of it will be left in the atmosphere unless we get smart fast and decide to leave more of it in the ground ;-)

Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.............does anyone else see the extreme irony in Australia being at 6's and 7's over reducing carbon emissions yet it is the guardian of some of the world's greatest marine treasures and is destroying these treasures.

The Australian Opposition and the Australian Senate should hang its head in shame for rejecting any political progress by Australia on climate change,

I understand that Australia is per capita the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases....even more than the USA.
