Seeing the header on this website's Home page about Petrel Heads got me looking at Motuora Island websites because our branch recently gave money for nesting boxes for petrel tranferred there.
The island being pest-free has made it available for so many projects - a creche for kiwi chicks hatched inh Operation nestegg (the juveniles are kept on the pest-free island til they're big enough to go back to the bush and fight off predators, there's about 60 kiwi juveniles there now), transfers of whitheads and petrels, and geckos and wetas as well. All because it is pest-free.
Most fun project for me was their "planting" aertifical gannets (Judas gannets?) on the island to attract thye real wild passers-by.
So much can happen once an island/area is rid of animal pests.
Information about the transfers etc at Motuora is available on this website http://brucemotuoraphotos.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/the-gannets-that-never-were/#more-338
Great as it is, it'd be a shame if offlying islands became the only places our wildlife could live.
