ok, i have recently come thru chemo, radiation etc and the most important part of recovery is SLEEP. thanks to the little s**t playing on the roof every night i am getting very little. we have a large inner city garden with lots of native growth (even a family of 3 adult/ 5 baby pukekos) but need the possum's out. fast. its been months and i am getting more and more tired. can anyone recommend something or preferably someone to put out the unwelcome mat? auckland council doesnt want to know even though its their reserve at the bottom of the garden...

    Hi Sleepless
As you obviously live in the Auckland City Council area, the local F&B branch is Central Auckland. That branch has no reserves of it's own and so no pest control operations going on of it's own, but I suggest that you call the F&B field officer at the local F&B office at 3023901 and ask to speak with Nick and ask him about possum pest control in your city garden. Nick is involved with pest control at Lucas Creek right now and has current knowledge about what's available.
There's also the work going on at Ark in the Park (Waitakere) and that involves a lot of trapping also, so they'll have information about what you can use in the urban area.
BTW, what reserves are near your property, (where do you live?) and we might be able to speak with someone appropriate ( 8-) ) at ACC, or see what other parties can help. Our Central Auckland KCC has just started looking first-hand at tracking pests (next step is trapping etc) so we're hoping to teach Auckland (urban) children about pest controls in the city's gardens.
Find about the Central Auckland branch on this website.

Try these. My friend got 52 Possums with 3 traps in 50 nights!

Timms traps - of course !! (hey - it's early for me and I haven't had my cuppa coffee yet!! give a girl a break!) - Nick in at the office did a course last year on trapping, and the work he's doing at Lucas Creek is working with local private-landowners about pest controls, so he should have advice about how to use those traps, where to get them too, and all that...You could even ask him specifically about Timms traps...

    Hi all,

the anti 1080 brigade are at it again - this time to herbicide contractors (irony anyone?), who reckon they weren't warned there was a 1080 drop in the park (they were). There's a poll on the right hand side next to this article

    http://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/top-stories/6899931/doc-contractors-speak-out-after-1080-drop/

Please vote a common sense reply, based in fact, not hysteria.

if you're still not sure about 1080 (although most people on here seem to have good access to the facts) - try http://www.doc.govt.nz/conservation/threats-and-impacts/animal-pests/methods-of-control/1080-pest-control/

this is a good chance for Forest and Bird to follow their slogan and "Give Nature A Voice"!

Where abouts do you live Liam, rural or town? (Different methods are better at different places).
In the meantime, this discussion has some useful bits in it about methods http://forum.forestandbird.org.nz/topic/pest-control-how-to-do-it and this link is helpful http://www.forestandbird.org.nz/what-we-do/branches/waitakere/about-us/animals-control
