    Gutting!

Attempts to safeguard the future of endangered Atlantic bluefin tuna have failed as a result of intense lobbing by the international fishing industry.

Check out the BBC-World story here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8574775.stm

Atlantic bluefin tuna - featured in the documentary film 'The End of the Line' is in a desperate situation, having been serially depleted to critically low levels.

High hopes of an internationally agreed ban on the fishing of this species have just been quashed - largely by states with an interest in this fishery.

Forest& Bird helped bring film The End of the Line to New Zealand screens, recently premiering the film in Wellington. Check out this thread:

Closer to home, our critically endangered Southern bluefin tuna faces similar pressures. Despite international agreement to cut quotas by 20%, New Zealand 's Ministry of Fisheries has proposed to increase the NZ catches by 25%:

A decision is yet to be made by acting Fisheries Minister David Carter.

    What can you do??

    DO NOT BUY BLUEFIN TUNA

Alternative tuna species (skipjack and albacore) are recommended. See our Best Fish guide for more info:

And don't forget about what's in sushi. I suppose you could ask the chefs/salespeople what fish is in their sushi?
