    Sandflies-Te Namu.

I know that these are part of natures rich tapestry. However when they are crawling all over my bare skin and biting hard and it hurts like hell, I can't resist squashing them.

    What can I do?

The practical responses are to wear repellant, stand in the forest where there are few sandflies, wear long sleeved and legged clothes, stand in the wind but despite all this there are stil jobs that you have to do where they attack your neck, face and hands. I have to confess that in those circumstances I am guilty of killing native animals, the sandfly.

My response to the silly You Tube stuff above is that whether we like it or not we are part of nature and we have always made choices about what should live and what should die. We have made an informed choice to do our utmost to save our unique and threatened NZ native plants and animals. That choice though is tempered by practical reality. Technically perhaps you could be prosecuted for killing sandflies, a native animal, in a NZ National Park. However in practice it will never happen because Park Administrators and Prosecuters and Judges are all realistic.
