I would just like to thank the Lower Hutt and Wellington branches for their sterling efforts in helping to protect this iconic landscape with its important ecological and recreational values. I would also like to acknowledge the letters of support from the National Manager and the Kapiti branch.

I was really very pleasantly surprised to see that DoC had been involved in the purchase for open space to be managed by the regional council given some of the rumours around right now about central government's 'concerns' about the role of regional councils.
Is this management in perpetuity? Reason I ask is that a sort of similar land-ownership/management issue up here is for Hamlins Hill/Mutukorea, which was purchased by central govt about a decade ago, and the land then leased on a ten-yearly tenure to be managed by Auckland Regional Council as a regional park but 'ownership' is with a consortium of parties, not least of which is iwi who were looking at possible settlement claim of the property I believe. It seems that no-one's quite sure about long-term future of the land which is still being negotiated, or no-one I've talked with at least.
Baring Head might be quite a different proposition, with protection of this open space being in perpetuity. That'd be great! Sounds like F&B up here could do with getting some advice from Wellington branches about ways of getting more involved in ownership matters of these bits of land; who to lobby, what meetings you were involved with and which parties, that sort of thing.
