A group of F&Bers up in Auckland are working with NZTA to restore and re-habilitate an area where there will be motorway works done starting this year. We have suggested in our submission that the area be re-colonised with a local manuka variety, Kunzea ericoides variety linearis, which is now almost gone from its original habitat. Very attractive and complex flowers with red centre.

They were originally found around Auckland's Waitemata Harbour area only, as far north as Te Arai Point however almost extinct now from its origin - we are doing our little bit to restore their presence back to the area. In our submission to NZTA, we have specifically requested this variety be mass-planted to restore original vegetation.

The response from NZTA/botanists has been fairly positive, but they are concerned that there aren't sufficient sources to get plants from.

Any suggestions about availability (if not about the plant itself) would be greatly appreciated.

That's great news! I suggest you contact Peter de Lange who has researched Kunzea for his PhD. He was quoted in a story in one of last year's Forest and Bird magazines.

    Email him at: pdelange@doc.govt.nz
