Heard from a friend from Friends of the Earth who was part of the hearing to try and ensure "safety" with the poison drop at Shakespeare, and he was present at the first drop and was pleased to report that he felt the parties did a pretty good job re health and safety issues. They had volunteers clearing seaweed from the beaches so that no stray birds might eat any hidden pellets. Also, several birds and animals resident at the park had been temporarily removed during the operation. And rather than use the usual swirling bucket below the chopper to drop the pellets, along the coast they used a funnel-type of dispenser (slower but very accurate apparently - my friend said he was quite amazed by the accuracy with which the copter pilot ensured no pellets went below high tide mark). And more volunteers cleared away any pellets that went onto roadways and could've been crushed by vehicles.
In all, a good job by Auckland Council then.
He said he was particularly appreciative of the way the council staff were so friendly to the Friends of the Earth observers - no anamosity.
So good to see less aggro over this issue and it being handled pretty maturely.
