The tiny Pacific nation of Palau has banned all commercial fishing of sharks within its waters, creating a sanctuary for sharks at a critical time for the species.

With approximately one-half of sharks worldwide facing extinction, the sanctuary -- which will comprise an area the size of France -- has been greeted by conservationists as "game-changing." BBC (9/25), Bloomberg (9/25)

    Fantastic news for sharks.

Come on New Zealand - we're being made to look pretty pathetic now. Not only do we allow shark fishing, we actually condone shark finning!!

F&B's pledge has just over 4700 signatories. If you havn't already done so - read and sign up now! We need to make a MUCH bigger noise if we are going to get the Minister of Fisheries to change his mind.

You can sign the pledge here: https://secure.forestandbird.org.nz/pledge/sharkspledge.asp

Check out the BBC link here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8272508.stm

    Or Bloomberg: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601080&sid=ay65l_G0xGcA

Galapagos has had a shark sanctuary in place for some years, but has suffered from ongoing fishing and shark finning with changing government policy.

Nice pic Kukupa -and nice pyramid butterflyfish lurking in the background too. A healthy sign.

Shame about the other photo. Presume you've already written and asked for it to be removed? Looks like a blue shark aswell - number one target for shark finning in New Zealand. CSIRO have estimated a 40% decline in blues in the Tasman over the past 10 years :(
