    Hi Ruby,

Given that this is obviously a natural event, i.e. a toxic algae - how do you feel about that? see - even nature can produce toxins... not just humans, this is a good example of how too much of anything (in this case algae) can be a bad thing....

i would be interested in your response to this, given your attitude about anything toxic....

will you be complaining about the algae?

  3. Interesting that DoC have done drops on Rangitoto... and interesting that DoC that have done drops up here in Bay of Islands.... and we are finding dead birds....ineresting also that no independent testing can be done on the cause. of demise... no results will ever come out from DoC .. they are in government pockets.... yes Ruby.... pure clean green NZ.. what a sad joke!

See its this kind of rumour mongering that really annoys me. MAF Biosecurity have already INDPENDENTLY tested the samples, so too have INDEPENDENT scientists, INDEPENDENT researchers have pointed the cause to an algal bloom... the facts speak for themselves.

It is very irresponsible to ignore the facts and create hysteria around an event that has another explanation.

    Disappointing.

  5. perhaps if it is a new toxin you will be putting it on your chips then Piwakawaka,no matter how many cretures die a horrible death from mans follys and greed, vanity etc.
I think the point is whatever the reason is this what we want as the future, i sure dont, and would like to move away from poisons and toic spills.

  6. So piawakawaka given that rape ,murder and genocide are naturally regularly occuring events .
Perhaps with your resoning the goverment should now sponsor them and use those methods for controlling people and wildlife.
ehmm lets see other naturally occuring events tsunamis volcanic eruptions possibilities there .
flu pandemics S.T.D.s aids lets get the whole arsenal out.
bugger climate change its just a naturally occuring event let our children worry about that.
Well i am sorry but its a worry to me when peoples pet s are dieing wildlife is dieing and the beaches and the sea are know NO go areas for everyone and we still dont know the cause .
They still dont know the cause and i am very irresponsible for being worried about these facts.

    Hi piwakawaka
Re your earlier comment about too much of anything's bad, I've never been able to figure out whether there IS such a thing as too much chocolate (well, for humans anyway, for dogs it's a given...). And despite that dogs can die a horrid death from choccie, I'd like to see our chances of stopping people eat it!!
So, with chocolate and dogs in mind, it gets even more complicated about what you can tell kids is safe and what is toxic poisonous ecocidic not-to-be-sprinkled-on-your-food, and what is nice healthy safe non-deadly good-for-your-health therapeutic drugs, eh? Seems like kids need to be told every story on it's own, and there's no 'one-size-fits-all story' for any drug/poison/chemical/toxin - what is safe for one might be deadly for another, sort of thing....

There is no link whatsoever between poison baits used on Hauraki Gulf islands and the deaths of dogs and fish. To suggest otherwise with absolutely no evidence whatseover just goes to show how utterly irresponsible and scaremongering the anti-1080 brigade are.

Speaking of life in the Hauraki Gulf - I was told a story the other day about the ferry-pilot who takes visitors out to Tiri seeing the birth of a dolphin as he was moored by the Tiri wharf. Apparently there've been a lot of marine mammals seen around the islands lately. Nice to hear some good-news stories as well as the other that's getting all the press coverage (boy, the media have a lot to answer for!!) - a conspiracy-theorists playground.....all sorts of emotional responses, I even heard some guy on the news say the bad stuff on some Auckland beaches was cos of the 1080 drops on Rangitoto - oh dear - no 1080 over there I'm afraid....Hope the media dwells on the benefits of pest-eradication half as much!

  10. Still a mystery !
    http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/auckland-beaches-mystery-continues-2901913

Strange how you all jump to the defense of the 1080 poison when no else has mentioned it .
    Guilty conscious no wonder .
    Anyhow still very worrying.
perhaps the media should be suppressed unless of course its its usual bioust towards the govt funded poisoning activities and propaganda campaigns.

They're getting closer to identifying it, phew! Nearly there...

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/environment/news/article.cfm?c_id=39&objectid=10590417

Conspiracy theorists beware - this may be just be govt-funded and media-abetted bias. Yeah, right...

See ya later guys - just off for some self-flagellation to try and do away with this conscience; it really is worrisome, not having one would make life so much easier...You could insult people and feel not the slightest remorse....

    Posted 2 years ago #
  12. self flagellation ,well dont enjoy it to much.
Seriously lets hope they do find the source of this toxic poisoning before any more creatures of the earth have to die .
seems to get even stranger by the day .

Yep, everyone's hoping the best for those whales and dolphins I spoke about earlier. I'd hate to be an aquaculture manager with any farms out in the Gulf - haven't seen any news about any mussels and oysters etc being with-held from sale though, so maybe any aquaculture is far enough away from the beaches named to be affected.
Be interesting if they do find a connection between these toxins and farm runoff like I've heard is one theory. What anyone'll do if that is the case will be interesting...It sort of sounds like they've got a fair way to go before they can definitely say what caused the toxin though, so maybe we'll never know for sure.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  14. Yes anne some amazing theories out there.
I do hope there is a positive answer, for the future to prevent any more deaths and poisonings etc

  15. Looks like a dangerous toxin/poison indeed
