Today the Dom Post reported that the Recreational Fishing Forum is calling for a law change to reduce the crayfish bag limit to just 4 per person - a drop from the current legal limit of 6 per person.

This recognising of the dwindling status of some of our crayfish stocks marks an important first step of returning them to good health and abundance.

Forest & Bird congratulates the Forum in taking this step.

Note: Crayfish or rock lobster as they are also known, were listed on Forest & Bird's 2007-08 Best Fish Guide as an amber species - one of the more sustainable seafood choices. With stock declines in some areas indicating serious problems with the fishery, the ecological ranking may not look so rosy later this year with release of the new guide. for more information check out www.bestfishguide.org.nz

Nice to see rec fishers voluntarily doing their bit - sets a good example for the commercial fishers, hmm?

This is great news! When I went diving a few weeks back there were 7 of us on the boat, at 6 per person, that is 42 crays!! WHAT A JOKE! We got 7 and that was heaps! I hope Commercial fishermans quota comes down too, in my opinion they have no more right to the Kai moana then you or me!
