Whale shark finned and left for dead - Philippines

    Am horrified to hear about the live finning of a whale shark in the Philippines, where I once studied and worked with local communities to protect their amazing marine life.

    You'd think that here in NZ shark finning would be outlawed. Unfortunately not.

    The wasteful removal of shark fins and tails is still legal in New Zealand despite being banned in many countries worldwide. Forest & Bird initiated a campaign to get finning banned in 2008, but both past and current Fisheries Ministers continue to stick by this barbaric and highly wasteful practice.

    While live finning of sharks is banned in NZ,it still happens as video evidence shows :(

    You may also like to know that Whale sharks are NOT protected here either. :( :( :(
